Disney And Comcast Clash Over Hulu Ownership

Disney and Comcast Clash Over Hulu Ownership

Disney's Ambition to Buy Out Comcast's Stake

Disney has signaled its intention to buy out Comcast's interest in Hulu, the last piece of a streaming puzzle that it seeks to complete. Disney and Comcast's NBCUniversal have been in negotiations to resolve ownership of Hulu, but they have encountered a significant disagreement over how to proceed.

The Stakes Involved

In November last year, Disney agreed to take control of Hulu and pay Comcast at least $86 billion for the remaining 33% stake after Comcast exercises its put option in 2024. Disney has guaranteed a sale price that would value Hulu at a minimum of $27.5 billion, making Comcast's stake worth at least $9 billion.

However, the negotiations have hit an impasse as Disney and NBCUniversal disagree on the valuation of Hulu. Disney believes that Hulu is worth more than $27.5 billion, while NBCUniversal contends that it is closer to $30 billion.

The dispute has led to a public war of words between the two companies. Disney has accused NBCUniversal of trying to sabotage the deal, while NBCUniversal has claimed that Disney is attempting to undervalue Hulu.

The outcome of the negotiations will have significant implications for the streaming landscape. If Disney succeeds in buying out Comcast, it will have complete control of Hulu, one of the most popular streaming services in the United States.
