Piers Courage: A Life in Racing

From Lotus to Frank Williams Racing Cars

Piers Courage was a British racing driver who made his Formula 1 debut in 1967 at the South African Grand Prix in a Lotus. He went on to compete in 29 World Championship Formula One Grands Prix, twice finishing on the podium. Courage is best remembered for his time with Frank Williams Racing Cars, where he raced from 1968 to 1970. During his time with Williams, Courage achieved his best result in Formula 1, finishing second at the 1969 Dutch Grand Prix.

Tragic Death at Zandvoort

Courage's promising career was tragically cut short when he was killed in an accident during the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. His de Tomaso slid wide, ran up a bank, and crashed. The red car rolled over and burst into flames, killing Courage instantly. He was just 28 years old.

A Gentleman Racer

Piers Courage was known as a "gentleman racer," a term used to describe drivers who raced for the love of the sport rather than for the money or fame. He was a talented driver who was always willing to help others. Courage's death was a great loss to the world of Formula 1, and he is still remembered by fans today.
